A Hawaiian's First Winter: what and what not to do

Winter is here! And in full force. Phil blames it on me. Supposedly, on the day it started snowing I sang Let It Snow and then it did. :-)

Since this is my first real winter (I'm told that an Arizona winter doesn't count), I have been taking it all in: the beauty, the unbearable cold, the shivering, being able to see my breath whenever I walk outside. While experiencing all of this I've learned a few things as a first timer...

1. Don't walk around with slippers (a.k.a. flip flops) in the snow or slush. Not only do your toes freeze, but your pants get soaked and you get pretty miserable quickly.

2. Don't walk under trees with snow in them: they like to wait until you're under them to drop heaps of snow on.

3. Don't park your car under a tree while its snowing pretty hard.
This could happen... luckily it didn't happen to me but I saw loads of people it did happen to.

4. Don't eat the snow once its touched the ground...nuff said.

5. If you are a woman, and you don't own a pair of pantyhose or tights, GET SOME. Going to church in a knee-length skirt is pretty miserable other-wise. (I don't own long skirts...I'm from Hawaii!!!)

6. Drive slow!!! The amount of snow on the road can be deceiving (esp. while its snowing).
Every time I watch the following video on youtube I cringe. Yikes!
(Hint: the movie picks up about a minute in...trust me you want to watch it)

7. Carry Chapstick with you at all times. And buy some lotion.

8. Do not leave the house with wet hair or you could end up like this guy...
Oh and apparently frozen hair can break off...goodbye long hair.

9. Be careful about who you throw a snowball at. Unless they are Mother Theresa or the Prophet they WILL retaliate.

10. DO take the moment to stand in the snow for a moment. Look towards the sky. It is a spectacular view.

Here's a few more photos I took...
Anyone up for a picnic?

  1. I am right there with you...oh, I would like to add that not all boots are created equal. Some soak through, while others are water proof...

  3. Don't eat the snow once it's touched the ground?! How else do you eat huge handfulls of snow? The rule is: If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's white, take a bite.

  4. Yes lotion lotion lotion. I love the snow. I am sad that we live in a place where there isn't much of it. And, though it is cold in Provo, it is even colder in Logan, where your nosehairs freeze each morning.

  5. Beautiful pictures Keola!! I love those last two especially. And so fun to read about what you are discovering, feeling kind of bad that as a good friend I didn't give you advise to not wear flip-flops in the snow and such... hahah-- and I though the same thing as Christian, you can eat snow off the ground, silly, it's wonderful! Just be careful where you scoop it, make sure it's fresh. :P Love ya!

  6. Another tip: Buy hot chocolate. Good luck!
