What I Didn't Expect
So,
I feel like I should be documenting this time of growing (literally) somehow. I mean, pregnancy is after all a significant time in one's life. So instead of writing all the really little things, because there are so many, I decided I wanted to write a list of things that have changed that I didn't expect (coming from a women who is pregnant her first time). I apologize in advance if you are reading and think, TMI (too much info!!!!).
1. I didn't expect to loose weight, instead of gaining, my first trimester. Of course this is due to the fact that I really didn't have an appetite and couldn't eat before 11am in the morning or after 9pm at night. There were a lot of awful mornings and nights in that time period where I would have given anything to just keep water down. But, ya know, its true what they say, you forget about it. I mean, a month ago I couldn't physically do the dishes or sometimes kiss my husband (unless he took a breath mint) haha, and now I feel great and can generally do anything.
2. I didn't expect to get so large, on the upper part of my body. Ok, I'll just say it: I didn't expect my breasts to get larger before I started nursing. But, nope, they did. And that is where I started growing first.
3. I didn't expect to be so tired. Some women say after the first trimester you feel a million times better and your energy comes back. I don't know if that is true in my case. I feel so exhausted all the time. But, then I remember, oh yeah, I am making a baby. It makes me feel a little better.
4. I didn't expect to be so MOODY, or maybe a better way to put this is, my husband didn't expect me to be so moody. :-) My mom told me that while she was pregnant her mood levels evened and she was more even tempered. Well lets just say, in this respect, it's not "like mother, like daughter." Poor Phil.
5. I didn't expect everyone to bombard me with pregnancy horror stories once I spilled the beans. Even if they are meant well, I would rather not hear them. I'm pregnant, don't freak me out!
6. I didn't expect to be SO emotional. I used to be proud of the fact that I NEVER cried during movies or most situations, like graduation. Seriously, growing up I sometimes felt embarrassed when others would cry and I couldn't muster up the emotion (for example at goodbyes or whatever it was). Now, I watch the right T.V. commercial with just the right balance of inspirational music and a touching moment and I am uncontrollably stirred to the point that I can't hold back teary eyes. Even if that commercial is only 2 minutes. Pathetic.
7. I didn't expect to be so "gassy" for lack of a better word. I feel that, like a child, I need to be burped after every meal. As my husband put it, "if you were one of the seven dwarfs you would be called Burpy." So sad, but true.
8. And finally, I didn't expect to be so clueless. Seriously. I feel like every day I find out something new about the do's and don'ts of pregnancy, but I guess you gotta start somewhere right?
Hopefully, you find this list helpful in understanding why pregnant women are the way they are, or at least get a good laugh.

It is a fun adventure! Call me anytime.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all Congrats! I had no idea! and second, if it makes you feel better, I've always been emotional. I cry on nearly every humane society commercial. :)
ReplyDeleteKeola...Thanks for sharing. Never is 9 months so L-O-N-G or so short when you look back on it! Collect or ask people for their funny stories, and i agree, just STOP women if they give you the terrifying "can you top this" kind of stuff. It is an amazing time! As I write this I think back on both Malia's and Noe's gestations and births and find nothing was ever so solitary a time...it's just you and your body and soul going to this amazing place. Having a committed father there is a great gift, but still he is outside of it, and YOU are ONE with the child. Much love to you! Aloha, Nora
ReplyDeleteKeola, you are just so great! What a great post. Funny and informative! You are such a great (how many "greats" can I put in this?) person and I wish I would have gotten to know you better while we were in the same ward. Be sure to posts pictures of your cute prego belly, please? :)
ReplyDeleteKeola, I remember I was emotional, gassy and moody too! Eat whatever you feel like eating and don't forget to exercise :) And thanks for the internet, I found a lot of information online and it made me feel less weired about all the different symptoms I had when I was pregnant.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Keola! I didn't even know you were expecting until I saw that cute baby bump in some of your facebook pics. I sooo remember those days and certainly recall all the crazy ups and downs of pregnancy. I think I experienced every emotion under the sun. Pregnancy and (especially) birth can be such a great experience. Don't let anyone freak you out. It's beautiful and can go smoothly if you have the right mindset. You can check out my experience if you like (to help offset any horror stories you may have heard.) Good luck! You'll do great and be such an awesome mommy! http://www.sopupuka.com/2010/04/27/my-labor-and-delivery-story-the-longer-more-thorough-version/
ReplyDeletehaha everything on here is so spot on! Brian and I were talking about Harry potter one time and I started talking about Doby and then I was saying how he was such a good elf then next thing you know I was crying lol. And I totally agree with you on the horror stories!! its kind of annoying haha.
