Trip to Hawaii

For my 26th birthday Phil surprised me with an amazing gift: a trip to Hawaii. It was just Emma and I because Phil was in school, but it was so good to be home.

We jumped around from place to place but ended up splitting the trip between La'ie (with Phil's family), Wai'anae (with my Mom and Stewart), and Big Island (with my Dad and Theresa). Each place was a blast.

As far as my plans, I mostly wanted to spend as much time at the beach as possible, which I did. However, when it comes to food I had plans. Oh, boy did I.

This was my list of places to eat, I almost made it to all of them thanks to my Moms (Lee Anne and Sallee). Don't judge me :)

Places to Eat
Kahuku Grill
7 Brothers
Kahuku Farms
Ted’s Bakery
Papa Oles
Kaka’ako Kitchen
Bravos
Hanaras
Matsumotos Shaved ice
Big Island Candy

Ken’s House of Pancakes

Being home was so refreshing. On my first day back I went for a walk to the beach, as I walked people out and about waved and said "Hi." I forgot how much I missed that, living in Utah. I missed the aloha spirit so much. The humidity, however, I did not miss as much. I never used to notice it, but after living in Utah for two years I felt it... oh did I feel it. I'm sure being pregnant didn't help, but I was miserable for the first few days and couldn't sleep with even a sheet on.

I also forgot about the white noise that constantly surrounds you in Hawaii. On the Big Island it was the Coqui frogs. In La'ie it was the roosters. In Wai'anae it was the dogs barking everywhere. It made it hard to sleep some nights, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

It was so much fun introducing Emma to Hawaii. Although she was born there, we moved when she was only three-months-old. And even though she went swimming in the ocean as a baby, she doesn't remember it. Our first day at the beach when we reached the sand she wouldn't step in it. She was so confused by this new substance. Finally, I picked her up and tried to dip her feet in it, but she lifted her legs as far as she could to avoid the sand. I laughed at her resistance. However, it wasn't long after I sat her in it and drizzled the little flecks of rock and coral on her legs that she began to play in it. The water was a different story. I couldn't keep her away from it. As soon as she saw it she plowed her way down to it and collapsed in the waves. She definitely takes after me when it comes to loving water.

Hawaii really is paradise and I feel so grateful to have been raised there. I'm grateful for parents who decided living in a place like Hawaii was worth not having a nice house or nice car and I hope one day that I can call it my home again.
